Italian Sausage Grilled Cheese

Our North Beach Seasoning is packed full of flavor. Add to soups and stews for tomato-y richness, blend with ground meat for extra savory flavor, add warm water to create a marinara dip, or simply sprinkle on some garlic bread.

Italian sausage and marinara sauce, what could be better? Our North Beach Seasoning has a classic marinara flavor that is easily rehydrated with a bit of water. Combined with gooey melted mozzarella and a good sourdough bread, this grilled cheese is out of this world.

Be sure to press the sandwiches well to create an even crust, and remember to check on it after a few minutes to prevent overbrowning. This recipe makes 2 sandwiches, but can easily scale up for more.

Ingredients

1/2 lb Italian sausage meat
2 tbsp North Beach Seasoning
1/4 cup water
4 slices sourdough
3-4 tbsp mayonnaise
1/2 cup low moisture mozzarella, shredded
2 tbsp butter
Vegetable oil or olive oil

Directions

In a skillet over medium high heat, add the vegetable oil and Italian sausage. Break up the sausage with a spoon and cook until evenly browned. Add the North Beach Seasoning and 1/4 cup water. Stir to combine and cook for 1 minute. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Add sausage and marinara sauce to 2 slices directly onto the mayonnaise side and spread evenly. Top the sausage with shredded mozzarella and place the other slice of bread on top with the mayonnaise inside.

Preheat a heavy bottomed skillet over medium-low and melt 1 tbsp butter. Place each sandwich in the pan and place another pan on top of the sandwiches. Add cans of food to the empty pan to weigh it down and press the sandwiches lightly. Grill for 3-5 minutes until a golden brown crust forms on the bread.

Remove the empty pan and transfer the sandwiches to a plate. Melt the remaining 1 tbsp butter and transfer the sandwiches back to the skillet, flipping over to toast the other side. Continue cooking another 3-4 minutes until a golden brown crust forms.

Serve warm.
